Web 2.0 Beyond Web Applications: A Look into Kevin Oliver Article By: Egbal Mohamed Graduate student at American College of Education Despite the fact that ICT topics nearly always involve many interesting areas, choosing the right topics to teach always remains a challenge for teachers.   In these days, the word “communication” is a tricky one, when we are teaching ICT to digital native learners. Undoubtedly, students will come to class expecting teachers to integrate the social communication tools they use everyday into this class. They will be asking: are we going to use Facebook in this class, are we going to tweet a little bit, can we use the chat in this class? As an educator, I feel their expectations should be met especially as I am a big believer in differentiation in teaching. As a technology teacher, I feel more productive in teaching those students many different ways of learning today’s technology and giving them the chance to explore more abou

How Computer has Reformed our Lives

I have designed this unite to be taught to grade 6 students at our school.   I realized that I have to explain lots of things to the digital natives because they have no idea what life was like before the computer was invented.   It was so interesting to see the expressions on their faces when I talked about mainframes computer and how big the computer was in the early days.    I used the Intel website as a virtual tour to explore the computer’s history and how the Internet works.   Students did a great job searching the information and sharing it during class time.   When we started taking about Web 2.0 applications that was another story.   Students became so excited to explore different applications and to try them.   Beside Facebook and YouTube, they have learned about Edmodo, Voice Thread website, Wiki, Blog, Vimeo, Prezi, Flikr, and Skype.   Despite the fact that we all worked on edmodo.com and voicethread.com creating classwork work and sharing it, I have fo

ICT Class for High School

ICT (Information and Communication Technology) term is replacing the term of IT (Information Technology) which, in the past time meant the study of how the computer process data in many different ways (software and hardware). The classes I had in my college years were related to learning about computers hardware (The major components of the computer) and the software (learning about operating systems, and different types of the software beside the Internet). In these days, the word “communication” is a tricky one, when we are teaching the ICT to the digital natives learner. Students will come to class expecting you to integrate the social communication tools they have been using everyday into this class. They will be asking you: are we going to use facebook in this class, are we going to tweet a little bit, can we use the chat on this class…. etc. As an educator, I feel their expectations should absolutely be met; especially I am a big believer in differentiat

Digital Natives

Digital Dossier posted on YouTube "A digital native is a person who has grown up with digital technology such as computers, the Internet, mobile phones and iPod. A digital immigrant is an individual who grew up without digital technology and adopted it later." When the first time I watched this movie from YouTube, I felt really scared from the future.  I start thinking of myself when I become grandma.   How this world will be in about 20 years from now.  But then I realized that if the world is moving this way, I have to be sure I'm following what is new in technology so when I become grandma I don't be ignorant when I take my grand kids to the doctor office or to school.  don't you think it is a little scary!!
